![]() ![]() ![]() The creatures that you encounter look great, and are varied in both form, and style of attack. The level designs also allow for multiple paths (accessible mostly by saving defenseless citizens), and a few other gameplay twists, such as your taking out targets while riding on a speed boat. You can expect your foes to pop out of doors, windows, and gates, and will more often than not have a creature leap at you from a balcony, or up from under a bridge. The good design manifests itself primarily in the creature placement. The stages in House of the Dead II are brilliantly designed, clearly by people who've had years of experience in the light-gun genre and therefore know how to keep things interesting. You'll find yourself traveling through four stages of multi-pathed gun shooting action. ![]() Err, rather, they set out to save all the survivors and find out the truth behind the recent turn of events. You take the role of either James Taylor or Gary Stewart, two chaps who've just arrived in a city, apparently in search of some guy they refer to as "G." What's this? The city's been ransacked by zombies! True to mindless action hero form, James and Gary bust out their '44s, and set about popping some caps into the loads of braindead zombies that surround them. The purchase is a nobrainer for those accustomed to the light-gun genre, and players who are normally turned off by the genre may find themselves having fun as well. It's not the worst thing in the world, and Sega has tried to make things better by allowing you to adjust the targeting cursor speed, but I'd personally avoid this game unless I were buying a gun peripheral along side it.įortunately, though, I've played through the Japanese version heavily, using the light gun, and I can pass on to you that Sega's House of the Dead II is a worthwhile game, even with the added cost of the gun. Without the gun, House of the Dead II becomes more of a chore than a fun experience. House of the Dead II was meant to be played with a gun, and as Sega isn't providing one, and I wasn't supplied with one from a third party company, I've been forced to play through the game using Dreamcast controller. People keep on sending me letters, asking such things as "Will the game include the lightgun?", "Am I going to have to get a lightgun alongside the game," and, of course, "What is the air-speed velocity of an unladen swallow?" The answers to these questions are, "No, Sega will not be including a light gun with the game - get over it!", "Yes, you're going to have to get the lightgun alongside the game, as the controller just doesn't' deliver the House of the Dead II experience," and, finally, "What do you mean? African or European?" I answer the Q&A here at IGNDC (well, I'm supposed to, at least), and one of the largest batches of mail I receive concerns House of the Dead II. House of the Dead II has me leaning more towards the love 'em side, though, with its faster, more varied gameplay, and its incredible graphical style.įirst off, let's get one thing out of the way. you either love 'em or you hate 'em, right? Well, I was kinda on mixed grounds regarding the issue, actually, as I sorta-kinda liked the original House of the Dead on the Saturn, and I sorta kinda liked Virtua Cop. ![]()

![]() ![]() Although he can be impatient with his family (especially his father), Remy cares deeply for his relatives and ultimately wishes to share his appreciation for fine cuisine with them. Despite the obstacles, Remy demonstrates over and over again that he is willing to put his life on the line if it means getting closer to fulfilling his dream. Personality… idealistic, clever, and determined. Through a little trickery, Remy is able to help Linguini cook, but Remy's DNA means he must stay in the shadows while Linguini's reputation soars. Remy is greatly inspired by the late great chef Auguste Gusteau and takes to heart Gusteau's motto, “anyone can cook.” But in spite of Remy's talent, rats are hardly welcome in most restaurants, much less a fancy establishment such as Gusteau’s. Besides, even if he were interested, it'd be hard to find a fellow rat with a similarly keen appreciation of food.Ĭhallenge… becoming a cook. For Remy, food is not just fuel, but a gift that has the ability to stir powerful emotions. “I’m tired of taking,” he tells his father. Although Django warns Remy not to trust humans, Remy is fascinated by their desire to discover and create. Excitement builds for Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure in the France pavilion at EPCOT as guest previews begin, a virtual queue is announced, and the official October 1st opening date draws near. After his family's previous home in the country was discovered, Remy escaped to Paris, where he was taken in by Alfredo Linguini, an aspiring chef. Living… in Paris, with the most unlikely roommate. Unfortunately, his talents aren't appreciated by his father, Django, who quickly puts Remy's unique talents to use – by making Remy sniff out poison. While the rest of his family are content to eat garbage, Remy dreams of foie gras and brie cheese. Unlike his fellow rats, Remy has a gift: an advanced sense of taste and smell which lead to a passion for food. Just like a great plate of food hits all the flavor profiles, this Disney World ride encompasses all the senses.Grew Up. It's one of those games I can close my eyes and see, not just because of the time I spent with it, but because its deadly, loney stone jail was a real place to me. It's all so simplistic now (and the Persian prince's Aryan look is excruciating), but at the time it seemed so much more coherent and driven than so many of its rather more abstract peers. ![]() I played because I was caught up in the bleak beauty of the titanic jail I was thrown into, because I believed the urgency of the Prince's quest - get out, get the girl, get revenge. That's never much interested me, unfortunately. Eventually, I managed what looked from afar like effortless flow (aided by the still-lovely animation), but the accomplishment of which was anything but. Memorise every spike trap, every enemy, every door switch, every health location, every mean trick Jordan Mechner's elegant platformer pulled on me. While some players could make it on reflex and observation alone, my poor co-ordination (improved but not lost by now) meant all I could do was learn the levels through gruelling trial and error. This was before savegames, before level passwords, before easy access to cheats: the beat the game, I had to play the whole damn thing through. I bludgeoned my way through it alone, with a determination and a patience I'm not convinced I have today. His frustration at seeing me witlessly tumble time and time again into timed spikes or through holes in the ground became too much, so he left me to it rather than continued trying to advise.
